Farewell to the Black Orchid
Perhaps New York's most beloved mystery bookstore, it closed in 2007. It was so small and narrow that its many parties and launches took place mostly on the street. Around the corner on Second Avenue at Willie's, also defunct, were the famed DorothyL brunches. At the farewell party: (left) proprietors Bonnie & Joe; (right) Harlan Coben & Alafair Burke; (center) Liz & Otto Penzler.
